Helsinki public sauna with sea swimming: which one fits your group?

Three public saunas in Helsinki where you walk out of the sauna and into the sea. What usually decides between them is booking, whether your group can sit together, and what you wear. Each fact below comes from the operator’s own page or the City of Helsinki’s MyHelsinki listing, linked under each card.

Mixed group, want showers and a towel handed to you: Löyly. Book ahead.
Mixed group, no booking, no fee: Sompasauna. No showers, no staff.
Alone or as a pair, a quiet sauna: Kulttuurisauna. Walk in on weekend mornings; no groups of three or more.

Löyly

Hernesaarenranta 4, 00150 Helsinki

Sea: Both public saunas open straight onto the terrace and the sea, all year. Swimming depends on the weather.
Booking: Reserving ahead is recommended; 24-hour cancellation policy. Book on Löyly’s calendar.
Mixed or separate: Mixed saunas. Separate changing rooms and showers for men and women.
Swimwear: Required at all times. Rental €8 for 2 hours.
Price: €29 for 2 hours, towel, seat liner, shampoo and shower gel included. Extra hour €12. Under-10s free when sharing a parent’s locker; under-18s only with a guardian.
Bring: Flip-flops or other wet-area footwear.
Note: The smoke sauna is closed for maintenance 8–11 October; Löyly’s private sauna opens to all guests meanwhile.

Sompasauna

Kansanpuistonpolku 5, 00570 Helsinki (Mustikkamaa)

Sea: You swim in the sea at your own risk. No lifeguard and no staff on site.
Booking: None. Always open; you heat the wood stove yourself.
Mixed or separate: Mixed, with no separate shifts for women or men.
Swimwear: Optional, in the sauna and in the sea.
Price: Free. Donations and association membership keep it running.
Bring: Drinking water, a towel and a padlock for the valuables lockers. No running water, showers or changing rooms.
Note: No car access; the nearest parking is at Mustikkamaa Sports Park. Not step-free. No photos or speakers.

Kulttuurisauna

Hakaniemenranta 17, 00530 Helsinki

Sea: Swimming in the sea; an ice hole in winter.
Booking: Morning shifts Fri–Sun 8–11:30, walk-in, last entry 10:30. Evening shifts Wed–Sun 16–20, booking required, last entry 18:45; the calendar on the Kulttuurisauna site opens two weeks ahead. A booking is 90 minutes.
Groups: No groups: more than two people counts as one. First-timers are asked to come alone. Friday evenings are silent shifts.
Mixed or separate: Separate saunas for men and women, per the MyHelsinki listing.
Swimwear: Bring a swimsuit if you swim.
Price: €17 adult, €13 student, pensioner or unemployed, €77 for seven entries. Paid on arrival; no cash.
Bring: Towel, sitting towel and a water bottle. No glass bottles or own alcohol.
Note: Closed Sunday 4 October and Sunday 11 – Sunday 18 October.
